Mountain Futures: Inspiration and Innovation from Honghe

Switzerland has a long tradition in collaborating with Chinese partners on mountain issues. In 2017, a team of scientists from the Centre for Development and Environment, and Institute of Geography, University of Bern, Switzerland and the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences proposed the formation of a working group on Land Systems for Mountain Futures as part of the Global Land Program, supported by the Swiss Government. The working group strives to synthesize contextual insights and knowledge across the diversity of challenges to mountain systems, incorporating new approaches to Land Systems Science which are required to generalize contextual knowledge while at the same recognizing local variability. With a vision of prosperous and sustainable mountainscapes, the Chinese team has launched the “Mountain Futures” initiative. It will create innovative solutions through combined research and traditional knowledge, with the goal of securing a sustainable future for mountains and their people. During the Swiss Innovation Week, the Kunming Institute of Botany will present the Mountain Futures project through interactive and visual materials from Honghe County of Yunnan, a UNESCO Heritage site. The event will also feature guest speakers and key stakeholders who are interested in sustainable mountain developments. The Mountain Futures book, another outcome of the initiative, will also be launched at the event.
